During the autumn,
the winter and the beginning of spring the Island
of Öland affords very special experiences.
Did
you know, for instance:
...that
you can find complete silence here? You can
stroll along deserted beaches and catch a salmon
trout even from the shore with your casting
rod, from the early part of spring till the
late autumn.
...that
you can easily identify constellations like
the Great and the Little Bear, Orion´s
belt, the Pleiades and even the Andromeda galaxy
on Öland, while 95 percent of the population
of Western Europe are unable to see the stars
which fade due to the light pollution? In August
and September you will also be fascinated by
the great number of falling stars Ñ a firework
display of meteorites crossing the firmament
on their way to destruction.
...that
the autumn season, apart from its particularly
mild climate with clear air, offers an exclusive
chance to provide yourself from Nature´s
own supply? Here you can find several sorts
of edible mushrooms, sloe and elderberries,
blackberries and rose-hips and - in the shifting
from summer to autumn - blueberries and cowberries,
in AE Mountain cranberries.
...that
the winter on Oeland can be really dramatic?
Its flat landscape gives free scope to the wind,
and when the blizzards strike, the snow-drifts
can pile up to several meters´height and
paralyze all traffic. The local name for the
phenomenon is "fåk", and it
is certainly better experienced in the warmth,
sitting at the fireside, while the wind is howling
round the corners.
